The story
The first thing they took was the radio.
It is midnight on New Year’s Eve, 1983. The music stops mid-chorus, the bulbs go dark and a convoy rolls toward a sleeping city. So begins a saga set in the fictional Royal Flora Company, a nation carrying the weight of coups, broken institutions, religious language, military spectacle and elite bargains.
The title borrows from the biblical Nebuchadnezzar: kings, beasts, watchers, pride, judgment and repentance. Through that lens, the novel refuses easy villains. Its leaders are men caught inside powers they only partly understand, and the story asks what becomes of a country when they cannot, or will not, repent.
The book is inspired by true events. Names, places and timelines have been altered for dramatic purposes, which keeps the invention at a distance and the emotional truth close.
- Eko Brilliant, visionary, dangerous, necessary and spiritually exposed.
- General Minna Brutal, and haunted.
- Okiki Wounded, and watchful.
- Daniel Young, uncertain and chosen to record what others would rather bury.
Inside the book
Five questions the story will not let go of
Is it power, or authority?
Anyone with a gun, money or a convoy has power. Authority, the book argues, is something else, and it is paid for in another currency.
Can a leader be both necessary and dangerous?
The book resists simple moral categories and asks readers to sit with men who are neither saints nor monsters.
What does citizenship cost?
For those who stayed, those who left, those who served, protested, prayed and compromised.
Does a nation’s future hinge on remembrance?
Whether ordinary people remember who they are, and whether the man at the top remembers what he once believed.
What if the figure we fear can repent?
The introduction dares the reader to consider that destiny is not as fixed as we think.
Power says: I can. Authority says: I earned the right. From the book
